“I purchased this vacuum to replace an inexpensive and tired unit. I had heard about the Dyson hype and read many positive reviews, but was skeptical. I decided to get the DC 25 – the DC 24 was what I set out to get but after physically viewing the unit I decided it would be too small for my needs.
After using this vacuum for about a month now, I can say that it is by far the best vacuum I have ever owned. It is very easy to maneuver around the floor and avoid obstacles as it pivots on it’s ball. The suction seems to live up to it’s hype even without the beater-bar activated to stir up debris. This is my first Dyson vacuum so I can’t compare it to other Dyson models, however it has sufficient suction for my needs.
It came with two handy attachments that work great for hard to reach areas. The extension tube has a clever design that is easy to deploy and has a good reach.
**PROS**

-Excellent suction even with the beater-bar turned off
-Safe for all surfaces, including hardwood floors (beater-bar off)
**CONS**

“We splurged on this Dyson after seeing the commercial, and wow, were we ever satisfied. We had an old Eureka Boss “superlite” that smelled like our dog whenever we turned it on. I dreaded the stink and knew it couldn’t be performing too well… WELL! One round with the Dyson and we filled the entire cup with dirt… horrifying! But also very satisfying. The carpets look like new. The ball mechanism is also very satisfying and easy to use.
I never thought I would look forward to vacuuming, but with this “gadgety” thing in our closet, I will not dread it! The initial assembly is minimal… Just a few things to attach and the instructions are undaunting– like Ikea instructions. Highly recommended!”

“I bought a Dyson DC25 “All Floors” model. There are several in the DC25 line; Animal, Blueprint, and the one I’m reviewing today. For the most part, they are the same. The only thing that varies are the attachments which are provided. I only know that the Animal version has additional brushes for pet hair.
First, the good.
“More powah’!” – This vacuum, it’s a beast. From the moment that power button is pushed down, the operator feels like the oxygen from the air is being sucked into it. This thing is really, really powerful. There’s also a button for the rotating carpet brush to kick in for some added “mmph.”
“Ballin’” – The unit drives on a single ball of various colors (depending on the model that one chooses) and allows for a rather easy pivoting motion when running along the floor. The ball truly shines when used on a carpet or rug, where it’s a bit tougher to turn usually. I was impressed with it. Maybe.
“Accessorizing” – This one will have to be in both sections, good and bad. The good is that there are enough hose accessories to choose from for most of our needs. They’re easy to pop into the storage stands on the side of the unit, as well as into the hose.
“Canister” – The DC25 is my first experience with a bagless vacuum. I’ll admit that my primary worry here was that upon emptying the container, all the dust would fly out. This model has a “drop-down” door; the idea is to put the canister into a bag of sorts, press a button, and the bottom drops out along with its contents. This works really well because while dust and dirt is in the canister, it spins and bunches up, thus lessening the number of loose particles which can escape. Darn smart, I say!
So far it sounds pretty good, right? Unfortunately, there is a need to write the negative section.
Here’s the bad:
“Cha-Ching” – $500! Since I’ve never looked at prices before, this was sticker shock for me. I can get an iPad for this price! A turn-off to begin with, but we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt for the moment. Also, with a 20%-off coupon from B, B & B, the price drops by $100 — a bit more enticing.
“Ballin’, but not too far” – There’s more good than bad, but unfortunately there is a “bad”; while easy to pivot, the ball is pretty big, or tall, or wide. I mean, the thing is just big and round. The problem for me was trying to get it under furniture…and it ain’t happenin’. How is one supposed to clean under their bed and sofa? Oh, the hose, right?
“Hose No’s” – Alright, so I need to vacuum under the bed. It is susceptible to the little molecules in the air, too. So I pop off the hose from the main handle, stretch it a foot, and CRASH! The vacuum fell over backwards. No bueno. The hose is tight and rigid and has virtually no give, even after some calisthenics exercises with it in hand. It’s also pretty short. This is the biggest drawback for me. The hose is needed to clean on top of counters and such, and if I can’t get it there, well, that’s a problem. Sort of along the same line, the electrical cord is pretty long, but because of its placement, I tripped over it quite a bit.
“Accessorizing, but cheaply” – Told ya we’d be back here. These little suckers are made from some of the cheaper plastic around. Each one of them snaps into the hose or its housing unit via a little clip. If the accessories are put to use even semi-frequently, they’ll break sooner than later. Trust me. Also, everything is fairly miniature size. The “wall edge/angle” attachment is pretty narrow (and short), and in conjunction with the super-tight hose, there isn’t too much that can be cleaned.
“Blowing and sucking” – In what might be the most intimate part of the review, the DC25 has an exhaust at the front of the unit, right above the ball. Depending on what part of the house is being vacuumed, the air which is blowing out of the vacuum can actually throw all of the dust which needs cleaning, right back into the air. Ah-choo! I’m not really in the mood to play hide-and-seek with dust while cleaning. I noticed that this is more of an issue when cleaning perpendicular to the wall; everything gets blown against the wall. No good.
Everyone has a different style of vacuuming; mine is to use the hose at the edge of the wall and on counters, window sills, under the bed, etc. For this purpose alone (because of the hose), the vacuum is not worth it. And that’s my biggest problem with it. Accessories really are available for almost any type of cleaning and can be found on Dyson’s site. If there was a hose extension, perhaps this review might sound a bit different.”

“Cleaning power was decent, but I can’t say it was any better than other vacuums I had. The unit seemed well-made, and I did like the track ball.
However, I had problems with the detachable extension wand. The way it works is that the solid extension wand is attached to a flexible accordion hose. When you put the wand back into the unit, the solid part is pushed down into the hose, like a telescope. The hose was a little too short for my tastes. Worse, the wand started to get stuck inside the folds of the hose. I’d push it down, but then it would catch somewhere inside the hose. I had to stretch parts of the hose this way and that in order to get the wand all the way back in. This seems like a design flaw to me. We decided to return the vacuum to the store for this reason.
The Dyson was not worth the money to me.
P.S. We switched to a Hoover Platinum Upright, and we are very pleased. Seems to be much better made than previous Hoovers we’ve owned (like the Windtunnel.)”
