“I’ve had this espresso maaker for just over two months now and it works perfectly so far. Just a few notes…

-If you desire high quality espresso/drinks, make sure you read all of the directions/tips that come with this machine.

-I chose this machine over the cheaper version by the same company (the cheaper version was around $80 I think) and I’m glad I chose this one. The cheaper version didn’t have a cup warmer.

-I hand wash ALL of the removable pieces after every time I use it. I feel that if you take care of these kind of items they not only look better, but they last longer.

-I’ve found that heating this machine up for about 5-8 minutes is adequate.

-I had read in some other reviews that the water drips out while the espresso shots are being poured. This happened to me at first, but then I found that you need to put less espresso in the basket to avoid this. I leave about a 1/4 inch of space between the top of the espresso (after being pushed down with a tamper) and the rim of the holder.

-I haven’t used the built in tamper yet, I bought a separate tamper and that seems to be easier. Search “Terry’s Tamper” on Amazon. It fits perfectly.

-At first I didn’t realize that the steam wand has the capability to just heat the milk, or to heat the milk and create foam. This depends on how high or low you hold the steam wand within the milk.

-Your drinks are only going to be as good as the water and espresso that you use. I use cold filtered water and a higher quality espresso like Illy (an italian brand) or Starbucks/Caribou, etc.

-You need to run water through this machine a few times to get the plastic-y taste out. Also, the more espresso you make with this machine, the better it tastes!

Overall, I really think you need to completely read the instructions and take care of this kind of machine to ensure it produces the best product.  I’m very happy with my purchase!”

“I thoroughly recommend this machine for its quality of build and brew, ease of use and clean up. Having owned and used a Braun Espresso machine for over thirteen years, I recently found myself in the position of purchasing a new machine. The market of home espresso machines has grown greatly since my first purchase in 1997, there were so many brands and models to pick from, I found the choice to be a bit daunting.

Being self constrained to a budget of about $200, I did a lot of reading, finally settling on this model of DeLonghi. I considered the DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker ($89) first, but many said the clearance under the grounds basket was short, I found this one to be the same distance others described on the EC155, that is 2.5″. That space is sufficient to insert a two shot espresso glass to catch the freshly brewed espresso with. Make sure you run at least the recommended five `test’ cups (without coffee grounds) to clear the machine before first time use!

PROS:
• Nice cup warmer
• Well made, study unit and accessories
• Steam wand easily accessible and works very well even with a pint steamer cup
• Warm up does not take 15 minutes to start brewing, you can start brewing after a couple minutes, but if you want to use the cup warmer efficiently you’ll have to wait for it to heat up
• Water tank easily removed/cleaned/filled
• Brushed stainless housing easily cleaned
• Steam wand easily removed/installed for cleaning
• Catch tray under brewing area easily cleaned
• Makes excellent crema (I love Dillanos Coffee)
• Will accommodate `coffee pods’ (I don’t use them)

CONS:
• Tamper is inconvenient and virtually useless”

“None of the reviews mentioned how NOISY the machine is when pumping the espresso. Got used to that. The espresso is very smooth and we are quite satisfied with this. The milk foaming apparatus is not satisfactory.

First BEWARE b/c it sprays about an ounce of hot water before it transitions to steam. The steam arm is short and in an akward position. Overall the foaming capacity is worse than with a Mr. Coffee-type eSpresso machine. So good espresso and poor latte.”

“I ordered the DeLonghi based pretty much entirely on the positive reviews. I replaced a 4-5 year old Breville machine in the same price range. In comparison, the DeLongi makes superior espresso. If all you drink is espresso, it is a great product…excellent crema, great taste, and simple operation. If you drink cappucino and/or lattes, it definetly has its drawbacks.

I swear that when the company desinged and manufactured this thing, they never bothered testing it for anything other than espresso. The frother wand is very awkward…way too close to the machine and too short. It is very cumbersome trying to move the frothing pitcher around and I have tried large and small size pitchers. The height clearance for cups is also too short.

Again, if you only make espreso and use very small cups, no problem. If you use even a moderate size coffee mug, there is absolutely NO WAY you will fit it into the machine without removing the drip tray cover. It is very tight even with the drip tray removed. What were they thinking???!!!

All that being said, it has proven to be a functional machine after my few weeks of use. It does produce great tasting espresso drinks once you learn to work around the quirks. It is just a bit aggravating to use.”
